The University of Bolton, UK held their graduation ceremony in KL recently to celebrate the achievements of Malaysian students who graduated from the BSc (Hons) in Logistics & Supply Chain Management and MSc in Logistics & Supply Chain Management programmes. 14 of them graduated from the MSc while 24 graduated from the BSc programmes. As these are part-time programmes for working adults, the majority of graduates have had to undertake their studies at the same time while fulfilling major commitments at work or in the home. ˇ°Being here today is therefore not just the result of your ability and application. Even more, it is result of your time management skills, your ability to prioritise, your staying power and commitment. It is these skills, in addition to the knowledge that you have acquired during your studies, which will stand you in such good stead as you continue to develop your careers and your subsequent input into society generallyˇ± was the message sent out to the graduates by Professor Stan Oliver, Dean of the School of Business and Creative Technologies, University of Bolton.
Among the high achievers were Sa Thin Wetsandornphong who scored a Distinction on the MSc while Ang Li Theng and Chong Kim Loong both achieved first class honours on the BSc programmes. A highly inspiring speech was delivered by Sa Thin Wetsandornphong who was the valedictorian and his vote of thanks went out to the academic staff of the University of Bolton for their tremendous guidance, staff of SCM Professional Centre for their professional contributions and support along the way and last but not least, to family members for their immense love, encouragement and understanding.
Supply Chain Management concentrates on all activities that bring products or services to market. These include sourcing and procurement, buyer-supplier relationship management as well as managing the physical flow, transportation, storage of materials and the management of information in the chain. All these activities must be carried out with a customer focused and cost efficiency priority.
Supply chain management education includes constant reference to real cases and real issues. It is a combination of delivering the right concepts with both face-to-face classes and discussions, and the provision of supporting on-line in depth material. Students often learn more deeply if they can browse and search themselves to find material relevant in solving problems set in the class room. If those problems also have a resonance with issues the real organisations are facing, then this becomes quite a powerful learning experience.
